Department of Nephrology

Nephrology department stands as a pioneer in starting dialysis services outside the valley with the aim of treating the patients in their hometown. The department now has also taken a giant leap towards starting the renal transplant outside the valley for the first time in the country.

Led by highly experienced professors, doctors and staffs and well equipped by all modern facilities, 30 bedded this department provides services for all kind of kidney problems. The Teaching Hospital is also giving free dialysis services to one patient every year on the occasion of world kidney day.

In a very short period of time, the department has grown tremendously in terms of its services and academic excellence. Recently in April 2015, the first renal transplantation was done in the college, which was the first of its kind in private medical sector of Nepal and that too outside capital city Kathmandu. Nephrology department is very much dedicated to patient service and thriving for academic excellence and research activities.

1. Outpatient Service

  • 3 days in a week (Monday/Wednesday/Friday)
  • On average 35-40 patients (Maximum 50 Patients) per OPD.
  • All Kinds of Kidney Disease patient including Post Renal transplant follow up patients.
  • Number of Post Renal transplant follow up patient- 10 per month

2. Inpatient Service

  • 30 bedded Ward.
  • Renal Bed in ICU-5
  • On average 90-95% bed occupancy.
  • All kinds of kidney patients.
  • Most common- CKD approx. 60% of cases.
  • Others-
    • AKI
    • Glomerulonephritis
    • Malignancy Related Renal Failure
    • Stone disease
    • Post-transplant patients

3. Dialysis Service

The dialysis unit of our college was established on 30th July 2007 with an aim to provide dialysis service to renal failure patients from all parts of the country. Currently 10 dialysis machines are in service and free dialysis services are being provided to the poor and needy patients. Approximately 2000 renal failure patients have been already benefitted in the last 6 years from the dialysis unit of this college.

Hemodialysis Service

  • Maintenance Hemodialysis Programme- (100 patients in pool).
  • Emergency Hemodialysis Service (Round the clock).
  • Hemodialysis service for Inpatients and ICU patients.

In a month on an average 550-600 sessions of hemodialysis are being done from the hemodialysis Unit and currently 80 patients are under Government`s free hemodialysis programme.

Hemodialysis With Ventilator Support in Hemodialysis Unit.

  • SLED (Sustained Low Efficiency Dialysis)- SLED service is provided to sick patients in ICU
  • Peritoneal Dialysis Service- More than 150 Acute Peritoneal Dialysis done in the ICU Setting.
  • Plasmapheresis service

4. Renal Transplant Service

College of Medical Sciences has always been a pioneer in starting the various academic and hospital based programmes. To add to the list the kidney transplantation is the latest. This college has created a history and has become the first private medical college in entire Nepal to start the renal transplantation. The first transplant operation was successfully performed on 24th April 2015. Department of Nephrology is proud to be a part of this milestone.

5. Kidney Biopsy Service

Approximately 300 kidney biopsies done in last 5 years.

  • Poster presentation was done on “Prevalence of Peripheral Vascular Disease in ESRD patients on Maintenance Hemodialysis: A Single Centre study from central Nepal.” Paper presented on 14th Asian Pacific Conference of Nephrology (APCN-2014), 14-17th May, Tokyo, Japan.
  • Dr Madhav Ghimre was awarded with “APSN TRAVEL GRANT AWARD” FOR outstanding presentation in 14th APCN-2014 AT Tokyo, Japan.
  • Oral presentation was done on “Prevalence of Peripheral Vascular Disease in ESRD patients on Maintenance Hemodialysis: A Single Centre study from central Nepal.” Paper presented on Nepal Health Research Council Meeting, Regional Workshop. June 2014.

Academic Activities

Department of Nephrology is highly devoted to academics activities. Academic sessions are regular part of the departmental activities. Various academic activities targeting students, interns, nursing staffs and post graduate residents are conducted by the department in regular basis. Nephrology department has produced 2 DM Nephrology graduate, one in the year 2013 and other in 2014 AD. The first graduate is the first DM graduate of the country. Currently he is working as faculty and in charge in the department of Nephrology of College of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital and leading the department. In order to update the academics faculties from the department attend various national and international Nephrology conferences to present their papers and show their participation.

Achievements

  1. Renal Transplantation
    • First Private Medical College to do Renal Transplantation outside capital city Kathmandu.
  2. Hemodialysis
    • First Private Medical College to bring the “Nepal Government`s Poor People Fund Programme” for maintenance hemodialysis patients- Since September 2012.
    • One of the largest  MHD Programme of Nepal.
  3. Collaboration with International Society of Nephrology – COMGAN
    Sister Renal Center programme for the upliftmemt of the department. This programme was established between Mario Negri Institute in Bergamo, Italy and Department of Nephrology, College of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Bharatpur, Nepal, 2011.
