Course Details
The College of Medical Sciences has started the BDS programme in the year 2011with an annual intake of 50 students and the 1st batch of students are entering into the 2nd year BDS course in Sept., 2012.
Admission Criteria for BDS course
- Completed 17 years of age by 31st July of that year and
- Completed 10+2 years of education or Intermediate of Science or equivalent examination (e.g. GCSE A level courses comprising Biology, Chemistry and Physics and AS/0 Level course in English with at least C Grade (standing in each subject) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as main subjects and having secured not less than 50% marks in the subjects mentioned above put together and an overall aggregate of 50%
OR,
Completed Bachelor of Science Degree, recognized by the University with one of the following subjects viz., Physics, Chemistry, Biology and at least one other prescribed science subject of study upto the ancillary level and having secured not less than an overall aggregate of 50% marks, provided that such candidate shall have passed the earlier qualifying examination (10+2 or an equivalent examination) with the subjects of Biology, Physics and Chemistry
OR,
Completed requisite course equivalent to I.Sc. (Biological Group) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as main subjects after Certificate Level in Health Sciences from Dhulikhel Medical Institute, Kathmandu University and having secured not less than 50% marks in the subjects mentioned above put together and an overall aggregate of 50%. Completed requisite course equivalent to I.Sc., or 10+2 (Biological Group) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as main subjects from a recognized Institute and certified by the University or HSEB and having secured not less than 50% marks in the subjects mentioned above put together and an overall aggregate of 50%.
Selection Criteria
The selection of the candidates is by:
- Entrance Examination (KUMET) and interview for Nepali citizens.
- Interview for Foreign candidates
- Nomination from Government of Nepal.
Objective of the Course
The objective of the curriculum for BDS degree is to produce well-qualified dental graduates who on completion of five and half years of the undergraduate dental program will be competent to carry out the clinical, preventive, and promotive roles expected of a dental physician.
Duration of Bachelor in Dental Surgery (BDS) Course
It shall be a minimum of four and a half years, and a one-year compulsory internship after passing the University Final Examination.
- First two years shall comprise of study of Part I: Basic Medical Sciences and Dental Sciences subjects
- The remaining years shall be devoted to Part II: Dental Clinical Science subjects including Community Dentistry/Medicine and related Medical Clinical Science subjects. No student shall be permitted to join the Part II: clinical sciences until he/she has passed all the subjects of Part I, except Community medicine, within the stipulated time.
Course Curriculum
The curriculum and the syllabus for the course shall be as prescribed from time to time. The basic features of the curriculum shall be as follows:
a. Part I: Basic Medical and Dental Sciences
Basic medical science course includes Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Physiology. Basic dental science course includes Oral Biology, Dental Pharmacology, Dental materials and pre-clinical in Conservative Dentistry, Prosthodontics and Orthodontics.
During this phase, Community Densitry/Medicine will be taught to familiarize students with epidemiology, health education, environmental health etc.
b. Part II: Clinical Sciences: according to the curriculum.
- The Part-II BDS comprises of General Medicine; General Surgery; Oral Pathology, Microbiology & Forensic Odontology; and Community & Public Health Dentistry.
- The Part-III BDS comprises of Oral Medicine & Radiology; Orthodontics; Pedodontics; and Periodontics. The Final BDS comprises of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics; Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Prosthodontics.
- All clinical dental subjects including Oral Medicine & Radiology; Orthodontics; Pedodontics; Periodontics; Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics; Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery; and Prosthodontics are undertaken throughout Part-II and Part- III BDS.
- Final BDS comprises of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics; Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery; and Prosthodontics subjects; which is of one semester or six months duration.
- Both theory classes as well as clinical exposures are given to the students as laid down by the university curriculum.
- During the internship program, students are posted to all clinical departments of dentistry namely Oral Medicine & Radiology; Orthodontics; Pedodontics; Periodontics; Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics; Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery; Prosthodontics; and Community & Public Health Dentistry.
- Compulsory pass mark in Internal Assessment is 40% in theory and 50% in practical/clinical.
- The mandatory minimum mark for passing in any subject is 50% of the total marks in theory and 50% of total marks in practical/clinical separately in the University Examinations.
- A student must clear all the subjects of Part I: Basic Medical and Dental Sciences, except Community medicine, before he/she is allowed into Semester V.
- A student must complete the different subjects of the Part I: Basic Medical and Dental Sciences within four years of admission.
- University Examinations will be held every six months according to the university rules and regulations.
- University Examination for Part II will be as mentioned in the curriculum.

Evaluation of the BDS program is done as follows:
- Internal Assessment
- University Examination
Internal Assessment
Performance of a student is judged by the internal assessment which has two components.
- Continuous Assessment
- Sessional (Semester) Examination
a. Continuous Assessment:
The Continuous Assessment process is carried throughout the semester. It is done by the concerned faculty members of each department in any of the following ways:
- Written test
- Practical/Clinical work
- Open book test
- Quizzes
- Projects work
- Home assignment
- Workshop/ Seminar
- Viva-voce any other method
b. Sessional Examination:
The Sessional Examination is taken by the concerned department at the end of every semester as shown in the table below.
The Sessional Examination shall consist of essay type questions with subdivisions or structured short-answers type questions, which require the students to write short, brief and relevant answers and illustrate them with the appropriate diagrams.
The sessional examination is carried in semesters of the year in exam- going subjects only.
University Examinations
The university conducts BDS Examinations as follows:
Part-Ill (4th Year) BDS University Examination:
At the end of semester VIII: In the subjects of;
- Oral Medicine & Radiology
- Orthodontics
- Pedodontics
- Periodontics.
Final (5th Year) BDS University Examination:
At the end of semester IX: In the subjects of (1) Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, (2) Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, and (3) Prosthodontics.
- The University Examination consists of theory, viva-voce and Practical/Clinical Examinations.
- Viva-voce will be a part of the theory exam.
Examination Schedule
- The University Examinations are conducted twice a year as follows:
- Regular examinations at the end of Semesters VIII and IX
- Compartmental Examination after 06 months.
- The theory examination for all subjects shall be held on separate days with a gap of one day in between two subjects.
- Theory examination should not be scheduled on a national holiday including Saturday; but exemption shall be allowed for conducting practical/clinical and viva-voice.
- Viva voice is scheduled during Clinical Examinations.
Eligibility Criteria for admission to the University Examination
- Attendance: A minimum of 80% attendance is compulsory for theory and practical/clinical sessions separately.
- Internal assessment: A student securing less than 50% marks in theory and practical/clinical components of internal assessment separately shall not be allowed to take the University Examination.
- The attendance and internal assessment record of the students should reach the Office of the Controller of Examinations two weeks ahead of the scheduled date of the commencement of the University Examination.
- Defaulters or such students shall be asked to repeat the subject/course before appearing for the examination.
- Defaulters after completing the requirements shall be allowed to appear in the forthcoming University Examination.
Result
- Secure a minimum of 50% marks in the written component of each university theory paper (Full Marks = 70)
- Secure a minimum of 50% marks in University Practical/Clinical Examination (Full Marks = 80)
Grace Marks
- The total grace marks that may be given to a student shall not exceed 05 marks.
- The grace marks can be given in one subject or distributed to a maximum of two subjects.
- No grace marks are given in Practical/Clinical Examination.
- Grace marks shall be allowed only for passing all the subjects in the University Examination.
Recognition of Merit
- A candidate passing the University Examination in the first attempt and securing 80% or more in theory and practical/clinical combined in a subject shall be awarded a distinction in that subject irrespective of his aggregate marks in other subjects.
- The merit award in the subjects of basic sciences will be calculated on the combined Part-I BDS University Examinations for each subject.
- There will be merit awards in Part-II, Part-III and Final BDS University Examinations in each subject.
- The merit award for the Final BDS University Examination will be given even if a candidate passes one or more subjects in Compartmental Examinations for Part-I, Part-II and Part-Ill BDS University Examinations provided he/she will pass the Final BDS University Examination within the minimum stipulated time of four and half years.
Re-totaling
These shall be governed by the examination rules as laid down by the University. Re-totaling shall not be done forPpractical and Clinical Examinations.
Promotion:
A student must successfully complete all the subjects of Part-II (3rd Year) and Part-III (4th Year) BDS examinations to promote to Semester IX of Final BDS.
If a student fails in any subject of the Part-II or Part-Ill regular University Examination he/she is allowed to appear in the Compartmental University Examination after six months on a date as notified by the university.
If the student fails in the Compartmental Examination he/she will be allowed to reappear in the next Regular/ Compartmental University Examination of that subject.
Disciplinary Action:
The conduct of examinee and examiners shall be governed by the disciplinary rules as laid down by the University. The candidate who has been suspended from the examination by the university for any reason will not loose his/her chances during the suspension period. The examination/s which was cancelled due to the disciplinary action will not be counted, but the examinations undertaken before suspension will be counted as usual.
