Department of Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery as a department was established in CMS in June 2010, first time outside Kathmandu valley, by Dr. Cherian, who had started neurosurgery in Western Nepal two years earlier. The initial 2 years’ work in Nepal has been published in Asian Journal of Neurosurgery and this has definitely won laurels to Nepal’s Neurosurgery. In a short span of 11 months, the department had completed over 220 surgeries spanning all subspecialties including vascular, skull base, trauma, spine, and epilepsy, pediatric and minimally invasive surgery.

Considering the economics status of neurosurgical patients, we have started four free beds which will be used for economically deprived people and free operation and NICU bed will be provided them.

Dr. Binod Bhattarai is a Neurosurgeon with sixteen years of experience, trained initially from china, India and Nepal. He completed his MS Neurosurgery from Jiaotong University Shanghai China on 2005. Following his Neurosurgery training, he started his career in as a neuro-oncologist in BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital. In between he went to Mumbai India to get trained under Professor Atul Goel in microneurosurgery. After working in cancer hospital for 5 years he joined College of Medical Sciences where he got his MCh degree in neurosurgery under Kathmandu University. Since then he has continuously been working in this college.

Dr.Somraj Lamichhane who completed his MS Neurosurgery from Pakistan joined the Department as a Lecturer.

Recently Dr.Sunil Munakomi who completed MCh Neurosurgery from this Department as rejoined.

Presently we are providing Neurosurgical procedures on Head and Spine Injury, Neuro oncology, Neuro Vascular Diseases, Infective Diseases of CNS, Degenerative Spine Diseases and Congenital Diseases. Our average surgical load is around 50 Cases every month. OPD facility are available Sunday to Friday from 9.00AM to 5.00PM.

Department of NeuroSurgery is backed up by good radiological facilities (160 slice CT Scan, 3 Tesla MRI and Cathlab). We have separate Neurosurgery dedicated operation theater with Moller Weidel ICG incorporated microscope and NSK micro drilling system for safe neurosurgical procedures. In future we are planing to restart MCh programmer in Neurosurgery

Novel technique in trauma is a revolutionary way of doing trauma neurosurgery which incorporates the principles of vascular and skull base surgery. The initial results with this technique invented by Dr. Cherian have been excellent and it is being taught in centres in China and India. This technique avoids brain swelling and is being now tried for hypertensive intracranial bleeds as well. Dr. Cherian would also be going to Europe and Africa this year to impart training to Neurosurgeons in this technique. A paper on this is being published in the Asian Journal of Neurosurgery.
