MBBS in Nepal

Admissions for the 26th Batch of the MBBS program, commencing in 2021, are open. 100 MBBS admissions per annum.

The goal of the College of Medical Sciences is to select capable students who can gain by attending academic activities to excel in both the art and science of medicine. It is emphasized that student is always of a heterogeneous group. We recognize that a diverse student body promotes an atmosphere of creativity, experimentation, and create a conducive atmosphere for learning. The exposure to a variety of perspectives and experiences prepare students to care for patients from all walks of life and from every segment of society. Individuality, age, color, gender, race, regional origin, religion, status, disability are not determinants of diversity and are not identified as unique characteristics during the admission process.

Selection Criteria

1. Nepali Citizens – Entrance Examination and Counseling by Kathmandu University.

2. Nomination from Nepal Government (20% Seats)– As per Ministry of Education (MOE) directives, any successful candidates, who seek admission under MOE Scholarship in the colleges/institutions under Kathmandu University must sit for the KU entrance test. Those candidates will be selected by MOE as per their selection criteria after success in KU Entrance Test.

3. Foreign Citizens(50% Seats) – Entrance Examination and Counseling or Candidates passing recognized Entrance Test of concern year of MBBS/BDS program in their respective country internationally recognized test will be eligible for admission in the respective program of Kathmandu University. Apply online www.cmsnepal.edu.np at the earliest along with the online application need to upload the following documents (in PDF/image format):
   1. XIIth / A Level mark sheet (copy of the board issued mark sheet/transcript)
   2. Passport’s page showing name and nationality (Voter ID or Aadhar may be uploaded provisionally for the Indian national candidates)
   3. NEET/SAT score sheet of the present academic year, if available
   4. Photograph of the applicant

Eligibility Criteria

Must have completed 10+2, or equivalent qualifications, with a minimum of 50% of marks in each subject of Physics, Chemistry, Biology(PCB) (Which in general 50% is equal to ‘C’ grades for Sri Lankan A-Level and ‘D’ grades for International A Levels like EDEXCEL/London) and also 50% in aggregate

Completed Bachelor of Science Degree, recognized by the University, with one of the following subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and at least one other prescribed science subject of study up to the ancillary level and having scored not less than an overall aggregate of 50%marks, provided that such candidate shall have passed the earlier qualifying examination (10+2 or an equivalent examination) with the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology

Completed requisite course equivalent to I. Sc. (Biological Group) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English, as main subjects after Certificate Level in Health Sciences from Dhulikhel Medical Institute, Kathmandu University and having a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and not less than 50% of marks in each subject of Physics, Chemistry and, Biology (PCB).

There are several headings of fee structures. Such as self-financed student fee, hostel fee, mess charges, library and diary fee, student welfare fee, medical service fee, university registration fee, university affiliation fee, examination fee, student council and college day fee, student welfare fee, sports, and cultural activities fee, etc. The details of the fee can be obtained from the Director of Admissions, College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur, Chitwan (Dist.), Nepal.

MBBS 2020 Admissions: 25th Batch::- International Candidates (non-Nepalese nationals)

International students are advised to apply on the college website: www.cmsnepal.edu.np at the earliest with the following documents (in PDF/image format) to be attached with application online/off line

Instructions:

1. The online application form consists of basic personal details of the applicant e.g. Name, DOB, Nationality and Parent's contact details.
2. Applicants need to enter their grade/percentage of marks in the grades column.
3. Applicants from the 'A' Level boards that do not provide marks details (e.g. Sri Lankan board) may enter mid-point of the grades.
4. If English is not opted at the 'A' Level, the marks obtained in English at the 'O'/'AS' Level may be entered in the English column.

Five and Half Years

• Pre-Clinical: Two Years (4 Semesters)
• Clinical: Two and Half Years (5 Semesters)
• Internship: One year of compulsory rotating residential

The curriculum objective is:

• Student centered (rather than teacher-centered)
• Problem based (rather than subject-based)
• Integrated (rather than discipline-based)
• Community Oriented (rather than hospital centered)
• Electives embodied (rather than standard program-oriented)
• Systematic (rather than apprentice based)

This curriculum, which has been designed embracing modern education, science, and technology – as applied to medical education, provides for acquisition of knowledge of;

• Medical ethics of handling patients with dignity and decorum
• Core knowledge, the basic medical doctor must possess
• Clinical skills to diagnose and manage patients
• Desirable attitudes of acquiring proficiency and efficiency in the medical profession
• Competence to determine and resolve the health problems of the community
• Proficiency to function in diverse health care settings
• Interest in continuing medical education

Pre-Clinical: Basic Sciences ( Four Semesters)

Basic Medical Sciences includes; Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Physiology. These subjects will be taught in an integrated manner and would be threaded into Community Medicine and Clinical Orientation, as appropriate. Also, during this phase, the student will be introduced to clinical knowledge and skills utilizing a problem-solving approach. Medical Informatics will provide computer literacy relevant to medical education.

Clinical: (Five Semesters)

The clinical orientation begins right from the first semester. The second part (Part-II) of the course, namely the Clinical phase, is covered from the fifth to ninth semester. The comprehensive study of Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, ENT, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Orthopaedics, Radiology, Anaesthesiology, and Dental are taken up during this period. Teaching methodologies include hospital postings, didactic lectures, daily sessions devoted to seminars, group discussions, problem-based learning and integrated teaching sessions, fieldwork, etc.

Internship:(One Year)

After the successful completion of the prescribed course, students are required to undergo a compulsory rotating Internship for a period of Twelve (12) months in the college teaching hospitals and Community Health Centers, thus making them eligible for an MBBS degree. To benefit from the integrated teaching, students are expected to have 100% attendance in all subjects. However, under unavoidable circumstances, the students should have not less than 75% attendance separately in theory & practical classes in order to be eligible to appear for the University examination.

Internal assessment examinations are conducted at the end of each semester by the college. If a student fails, he/she is not eligible to appear in the University exams as per University rules.

University examinations in basic medical sciences are held at the end of the first year and second year. The students have to qualify and clear all the subjects of Basic Science, before getting the promotion to Vth semester (second phase). Students must pass all papers of the First tear (I MBBS) within three years of admission and must pass all papers of Second Year (II MBBS) within four years of admission. failing to clear any subjects (Five) attempts shall be debarred for further study as per University rule. Students who appear in the final University examination of Community medicine, Forensic medicine, ENT, Ophthalmology in 7th semester, can be promoted to the 9th semester only after clearing the above-mentioned subjects. The students failing to do so could appear for the supplementary exams conducted by the University every six months.

Objectives of the MBBS Programme:

On completion of the five and half year of MBBS course, the medical graduate should be able to:

1. demonstrate the understanding of principles and practice of modern medicine with an in-depth knowledge of the structure and function of the human body, normal and in diseases.
2. develop a holistic approach to the practice of modern medicine
3. advance one's own knowledge and skills through higher education via continuing medical education programs and research.
4. demonstrate an understanding of contemporary knowledge and skills
5. possess qualities of a compassionate and socially accountable human being
6. discharge job responsibilities with concern and care
7. provide immediate management care to life threatening situations by self
8. identify common health problems, manage them initially, ask opinion from seniors or refer to appropriate health institutions when required
9. provide education to people on health and health-related matters
10. participate in immunization programs and health camps
11. communicate will with patient and patient’s relatives by explaining matters known and refer them to appropriate persons when matters are not clear to self
12. provide all information on matters of management of patients to the patients and relations.
13. Identify medico-legal cases and function as required
14. Develop a health care team-approach and give respect to all the other member of the team
15. Give due care to children, elder citizens, and women
16. Provide health care by becoming aware of the ethos of medical ethics

The Internship period is for twelve months and it is a critical phase in the continuation of training provided to undergraduate medical students. It is intended to empower the intern with the skills necessary for functioning independently in the future. Besides encouraging the development of appropriate attitude, behavior, and inculcation of work culture, it is also expected that the Intern achieves the ability to identify, analyze and manage clinical problems in order to provide effective, efficient, and humane patient care.

The most important medical care in most parts of Nepal is primary care. Therefore, to be a competent physician in Nepal one has to acquire competence in multiple disciplines, below the level of consultants so that they can handle all illnesses under all kinds of circumstances and this level of competency has to excel in all major branches of medicine.

The University awards the degree after attainment of goals of the undergraduate medical education. The Nepal Medical Council grants interns the rights and privileges of a doctor. It is but natural that the Council, as a regulatory body, deems that the Interns should meet a set of standards of competence, care, and conduct so as to ensure public safety in their practice The Medical Council grants provisional certificate after submission of University’s provisional pass certificate. The Internship should be completed in his/her own teaching hospitals of the medical college.
